Dorothy Anne Bush Krueger, age 84, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2018, in Tampa,
Florida from complications of Parkinson’s disease. Dorothy, the oldest of four children, was born
October 25, 1933 in Louisville, Kentucky to Gordon and Nancy Bush.
She married Thomas R. Krueger in 1956, and they raised their four children together in
Wauwatosa, WI. Tom passed away in 1991, and at her 50th high school reunion in 2001, Dorothy
became reacquainted with Ray C. Obel. Ray and Dorothy declared their love for each other in
2011, and lived in both Waunakee, WI and Tampa, FL.
Dorothy graduated from Wausau East High School in 1951, and from the University of
Wisconsin – Madison in 1955 with a degree in education. She left teaching to raise her children
and became very involved in her community through leadership roles with the Girl Scouts,
PTA, Sunday School, United Way Fund, and the Wauwatosa chapter of the League of Women
Voters. After 15 years away from teaching, she returned to college and earned her Masters
Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She worked as
an admissions counselor at Alverno College in Milwaukee, focusing on a women’s re-entry
program. Years later Dorothy’s career path changed again when she became an alcohol and drug
abuse counselor at Elmbrook Hospital in Brookfield.
Dorothy was also a champion for a number of social injustices including the civil rights
movement as noted by her active membership in “Project Understanding” and the rebuilding of
the “Church for all People.” She was a proponent for the Equal Rights Amendment and actively
petitioned and canvased neighborhoods to share her passion for equality for all people.
She enjoyed baking, quilting, reading, and was the quintessential hostess ready for a party at a
moment’s notice. She also loved to travel. Throughout her life, she enjoyed many adventures
including a two-month European bicycle tour after high school, a month-long train trip with her
four children in 1974, and several international travels with her friends and family. Dorothy
provided many great words of wisdom, including “be kind to one another” and “life is uncertain,
eat dessert first!” She was able to surmise “the truth of life” from everyday situations. Above all,
Dorothy deeply loved her family and friends, and never hesitated to show it.
Dorothy is survived by Ray, brother Jack Bush, her children Kate Vanderbloemen (John), Meg
Yost (Jim), Nancy Krueger (Doug), Scott Krueger (Molly) and grandchildren: Jake, Thomas,
Lily, Amanda, Jessica, Alex and Grace. She was “Mama Dot” to Ray’s children Sue, Clark, and
Linda and their families. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother Cary and sister Nancy
Lee.
Services will be Saturday, August 11, at Delafield Presbyterian Church, 1851 N. Genesee St.
(Hwy C), Delafield, WI. Visitation will be 10-11, memorial service at 11:00, with a dessert
reception to follow. Private interment will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park. In lieu of
flowers, suggested memorials to The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
