Direct Cremation

Direct cremation is one of the simplest cremation options available. It does not include a traditional funeral service beforehand, which often makes it more affordable and easier for families who prefer a straightforward arrangement.

With direct cremation, the provider typically handles transportation into care, required paperwork, cremation authorization, coordination with necessary agencies, and return of the cremated remains once the process is complete.

Direct cremation may be a good fit for families who want:
  • a simple arrangement process
  • lower overall cremation costs
  • flexibility to make decisions without rushing
  • the ability to handle arrangements remotely or privately
  • a dignified option without a formal funeral service beforehand

Cremation Costs

Cremation pricing can vary from one provider to another, which can make it difficult for families to compare options. Some providers advertise a low starting price, while others present more complete package pricing upfront.

Understanding cremation costs means looking beyond the base price and asking what is actually included.

A lower advertised price is not always the lowest final cost. Families should review what is included, what may be optional, and what could create additional charges later.

Common factors that may affect cremation pricing include:
  • transportation into care
  • cremation authorization and paperwork
  • required permits
  • death certificate assistance
  • crematory fees
  • temporary container or urn options
  • additional mileage or after-hours fees
  • provider service fees

Cremation Process

The cremation process involves more than the cremation itself. Before cremation can take place, the provider must complete required steps, confirm authorization, maintain proper identification, and coordinate with the appropriate parties.

For many families, understanding the process helps reduce anxiety. It also makes it easier to know what is happening behind the scenes and why certain steps may take time.

Timelines can vary based on paperwork, approvals, provider processes, and other circumstances.

The cremation process generally includes:
  • transportation into care
  • identification and documentation
  • completion of required paperwork
  • authorization for cremation
  • required approvals
  • cremation
  • processing and placement of ashes
  • return of cremated remains to the family
